Portland Picks for Men!
We made it! We made it! This past Christmas Eve, the Portland Picks for Men blog came out with their top 6 favorite places in Portland for men.
The blog starts by explaining:
In this issue, our fantastic writers get some of the credit and praise they deserve for finding the coolest local businesses and sharing them with the rest of us. Don’t take our word for it, though. Go out, explore, and see for yourselves why we’re so lucky to live in the great city of Portland.
They had some really nice things to say about us and we are grateful to be chosen!

For the past few months we've had some really awesome DJs in regular rotation on Sunday nights. They all specialize in Soul and have amazingly fun collections. And so now, the Pantorium Soul Club is born.
This is Sarah, aka KBOO's Seamstress of Sound, a regular contributor to Sunday Night's Pantorium Soul Club. Sundays @8PM

MIA
Sorry for being MIA from both the store and the blog for a while. Justin and I both have been away, as I got surprised last weekend with my first trip to the ER and subsequent surgery, and Justin's been taking care of me ever since. I got some crucial stomach pains all last weekend and when I realized they weren't going away we decided to go to the hospital. Turns out there was a large mass in my abdomen that had been growing for a long time. Doctors said it needed to go.
It's been over a week and I have yet to leave the house. The boys at the store (Dameian, Reid and Nate) have all been AMAZING. They really stepped up to the plate and have been pulling double duty. They've taken over the things that I usually do - like food prep and grocery shopping. Of course, I still was orchestrating beer deliveries from my hospital bed, as there will always be a part of me that needs to be part of the action.
We're hoping to be back in the swing of things by the end of the week - just in time for Christmas! Thank you for all the love, flowers and best wishes you've sent our way. We really appreciate it.

Holy Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup!
We ran a special about two weeks ago where we had Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup. It was such a hit that we decided to put it on the menu. We make it with 21 Grain Dave's Killer Bread, Tillamook Cheddar and Monterey Jack. Plus I make the tomato soup from scratch with fire roasted tomatoes and NO dairy (we get asked about that a lot!).
Last night (and EVERY Monday) was 1/2 Price Sandwich night and I made a ton of grilled cheeses and tomato soup!! So much that in the middle of the rush I had to attempt to make more soup. The combo is a part of 1/2 Price Sandwich night, so not only is it delicious, but at $3 on Mondays who wouldn't want it?!?! No wonder I had to make more!!

Our first Hall Wedding Reception
This past weekend we hosted our very first wedding reception at the Hall! I got an urgent call from Oscar the day before looking for a last minute venue that could host a reception and also have children. Luckily for us, the University of Oregon vs. Oregon State Civil War Game was on that day so every other venue that had a television set was out of the running for their reception. He had been in the Hall once before and really loved the vibe; and we couldn't be more grateful for him choosing to call us.
I spent most of the morning in the kitchen, prepping their food, and they arrived about 3:45PM. About 25 guests enjoyed appetizers, finger sandwiches and of course beer and wine! The reception went off without a hitch and everyone had a great time! Justin even DJ'd for them!
We have a few more private events coming up over the next few weeks and we couldn't be more grateful. It's a great space for holding up to 50 people - and it seems that all my years of working weddings and private events is paying off.

Portland Monthly
I mentioned this briefly in a previous post but it's started to sink in how big this is so I thought it deserved its own post. Besides wanting to create a business out of love where we could be together, Justin and I really wanted to create something unique that Portland could be proud of. The kind of place where you take your out of town guests and in a sense show off something that is as unique as Portland.
We feel it building in the fact that people come in every day to show the space off to their friends - "You have to see this!" We are especially grateful to Portland Monthly for recognizing us in this month's Bar issue. We are proud to call Portland home and are so happy that you feel the same about us. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

New Art!
In the spirit of the ever evolving Hall of Records, we've got some new pieces of art on the walls! Unfortunately, the cord to my camera is missing so I can't upload pictures just yet, but hopefully we'll find it soon. Guess you'll just have to come in to see them :)
A few weeks ago I got a call from a girl in NYC who had a photographer friend in Portland. She said he loved Hall of Records and asked that we surprise him for his birthday by hanging some of his prints in the store. It was such a nice gesture on her part that I just couldn't say no.
She had me pick out some prints from his website: http://jackson503.tumblr.com/. The two that spoke to me immediately were the spinning record with the piano reflection in the middle and the zen rocks. Now Mile's artwork is on display in the Hall.
In addition to Miles, our amazing chalkboard artist, Edgar, is creating chalk art for sale on our walls. We are asked about the chalk art constantly, so we asked if Edgar wanted to do some more. So now in addition to our large menu chalkboard he has two pieces on the walls that are also album covers.
They are 12" X 12" chalk art album covers with a glaze sprayed over them. He's going to commission a few more and they are AMAZING. We had a girl in the store the other day that reps artists and owns a gallery and she said that chalk art is one of the hardest things to do. Edgar must be pretty special. He definitely is to us.

Giving Thanks
This Thanksgiving, Justin & I have A LOT to be thankful for. We've had an amazing year of seeing our creation come to life. We have great friends and family. We have a roof over our heads and love in our hearts.
We are especially grateful for the community that we are building at the store - which grows larger and larger every day. We have amazing employees (Reid & Nate), an amazing business partner (Dameian), amazing help and support from Mom, Bettie and our families across the country and amazing customers who are really becoming friends more than anything else. We couldn't have done it without you and are so grateful that you chose to cross the threshold of our front door and walk in to our lives.

Jamaican Night with Live Horns!
We met Buddy, aka DJ Green Mango, a few weeks ago when he stumbled upon our store to find a bunch of his friends (including the DJ playing that night) hanging out inside. He said it immediately felt like home and he wanted to throw a big party there. So this Monday, he's getting together an entire horn section and hosting a Jamaican Night at the Hall. Should be a great night filled with lots of great energy! Looking forward to it!

New Options!
Sorry it's been so long since my last post! I usually like to post a few times a week but things have been insanely busy! We've been making tweaks here and there to better the business - which has kept us on the go every day, combined with working at the store almost every night.
Dameian's pretty much done building the third record bin. By bringing in a new bin, we're cutting into some of the existing seating area, so we're bringing in some high top tables and stools for the middle of the room. I think it'll balance the room a lot, while also providing multiple options for seating. Some people like the small tables in the back for meetings or playing games, while others want the more bar experience of the high tops and others make a bee-line to the soft couches and chairs.
It's a balancing act to try to schedule all of these changes in unison. We can't bring in the third record bin until the new tables are ready - which are really the old table tops that we made, just on a taller base. But we need to wait on the new stools and still build a shelf for the listening stations - which should be cool because it can double as a wall bar when it gets busy.
We're also modifying the menu towards more snacks and small plates. We're keeping a lot of the sandwiches still because people love them and we've seen a hugh uptick in repeat business for the sandwiches alone. But we do want to offer more options because not everyone wants sandwiches for dinner or late night.
Our family friend, Bettie, has been a HUGE help in the food department. She's an amazing cook and everything she makes is soooo good. Every week she comes in to help make the soups (this week is Homemade Vegetable Minestrone and it's amazing!!). This week she's helped a lot with our small plate options. We've started to slowly introduce some new items - such as Cherry Tomatoes topped with Tapenade, Onion Confit Crostini and Three Cheese Garlic Bread. Soooo Good!!!
New items such as spinach dip and hummus made from scratch may be coming to the menu soon, too! We're still in the experimenting stage, but so far we've been eating like kings and can't wait to share. I can't even begin to express the gratitude I have towards aunt Bettie for helping us. She truly is a gift.
We've also started selling some record players. We're starting small, with our favorite portable record player from Numark. They are the same ones we use for our listening stations. You can USB right in to your computer and convert albums to MP3s. We had been telling everyone how much we loved them that it just made sense for us to start selling them, because we were telling people to go out and buy them anyway. We've had them in the store for three days now and have already sold two. Woo hoo!

Trends
I love seeing what our store is becoming! It's so interesting to sit back and watch something you've created evolve.
One thing we've been seeing a lot of lately is people bringing in games. They sit for hours sipping on wine or drinking beer while playing dominos, uno or cards. We even started bringing in our own personal games for people to play. I think it's just a cozy atmosphere for people to sit for a while, listen to the music and enjoy themselves.
And interestingly enough, we've seen a lot of girls in the store! I find this fascinating because records typically are more appealing to guys, but the space we've created is super cozy and appealing to girls. We now have two sections with soft seating (both a couch/lounge area and two super comfy chairs). It's so easy to get sucked in to them, drinking wine, for hours!
I love what we're becoming. I think we're going to expand the appetizer menu to accommodate the wine bar aspect that seems to be growing. We put new string lights around the windows and they look amazing. The whole space looks super inviting.

New Records and Bin!
I totally loaded up on a bunch of new records at the Night Owl on Saturday. I got a bunch of super fun $3 and under records plus Justin got a bunch of super great funk & soul. We're seeing two types of people coming in to buy records - those that collect the uuber rare funk & soul and those that love a great deal on a variety of different genres. I tried to load up at the record show to satisfy the latter.
Dameian's been hard at work building a third record bin for the store. We're making our record area larger to make it easier to flip through the records. We also created a large lounge area with the couch and benches in the front window to accommodate the fact that people love to dance at our store!! One of these days, I swear, the dust will settle!!

Gratitude
Every night before we go to bed, Justin and I each say five things that we're grateful for. Justin is amazing because no matter what, he always remembers to do it. Me, not so much, but that's why we make such a great team. I wanted to share some of those things from last night.
I am so grateful for all the people that come into our store and tell us how much they love it.
I am so grateful for all of the DJs that do such a great job and all of their friends that come support them. You are amazing.
I am so grateful for Justin's mom, Tracey, who has played a huge part in the success of our life.
I am so grateful for the people that have made us part of their regular routine. I love seeing your faces when you come through the door.
I am so grateful for the lady last night that got Justin and I dancing and also took this picture:
All of you made our night and our year.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Happy Hour 2.0
I can't believe how much tweaking and changes need to be made on a new business! I feel like every day I'm running to Kinko's or to Office Depot to get more paper to print new menus to accommodate the changes.
One update is that we now have SOUP! Aunt Bettie made some amazing homemade butternut squash soup for us! We sold our first batch last night and got two big thumbs up!
We've also updated our Happy Hour offerings to include FOOD! And we've extended the hours from 4PM - 7PM Monday through Friday. Here's our new Happy Hour Menu:

Friday - Open Tables!
Every Friday we do open turntables where people can sign up for a 30 minute slot to DJ and play their own records. It's super fun and we get to hear a plethora of different musical tastes.
Now me, Katie, being the bartender part of the Hall of Records records & bar equation, never really owned many records beyond Abbey Road. But today I bought my first record from the store with the intention of building a 30 minute set to play at Open Tables night! And the first of that collection is:
Mr. Big Stuff!
Who do you think you are?

Neighbors Opening
Last night, Justin and I sat at the newly opened Circa 33 and marveled at how it and our own business came to be. The reality is if we hadn't had met Carl, the owner of It's a Beautiful Pizza, and started throwing parties there, where we sold records, then neither Circa 33 nor what we know as Hall of Records would even exist.
I was scrolling down our blog and took special note of a picture of Justin DJing one of our "Wax Broker Riot" parties. The DJ table set up in the picture is exactly where we sat last night for dinner at Circa 33.
My what a difference some determination makes.
PS. I am super bummed the picture is coming out so small. My computer crashed a few months ago and I lost all the originals. Boo.
I was scrolling down our blog and took special note of a picture of Justin DJing one of our "Wax Broker Riot" parties. The DJ table set up in the picture is exactly where we sat last night for dinner at Circa 33.

Neighborhood Wine!
We just started carrying wine made right in the neighborhood! Ryan from Enso Winery had emailed us months ago to congratulate us on opening and told us about his winery. At the time, the wines weren't ready for tasting but we're all about building relationships with neighbors so we kept in touch.
About two weeks ago Ryan and his partner launched their Resonate Wine Line and had a big party to celebrate. It turned out to be the same night as our Grand Opening and he sent a bunch of his fellow celebrants over to the Hall with samples. Not only is it good wine, but they're really good people! That goes a long way in our book.
So now we have Enso Resonate White on our menu! It's a dry Riesling and it's mighty tasty!

Break Beats & Old School Hip Hop
I'm excited for tonight!! The DJ specializes in Break Beats & Old School Hip Hop. I can't wait to hear songs that I haven't heard in forever! Should be super fun.
And on another super positive note, another Willamette Week article came out about us yesterday! They sent a camera guy out to our Grand Opening so I had a feeling that we'd get a mention in this weeks edition. I nervously flipped through the pages to see if we made it, and we did!!
Mad love to the Willamette Week.

Good Food Late
I can't believe how many sandwiches we've been selling lately! It's starting to catch on that we have good food :) People keep commenting on how good it is and how they love that they can get good food late at night. We're starting to get people that come in for sandwiches multiple nights in a row! And we heard that our new friend Sean even wants to have Gerry's at his wedding. LOL I love it!!

The roller-coaster
To say I've been on an emotional roller-coaster the past week would probably be a gross understatement. We've had uber high highs of our Grand Opening, amazing 1/2 Price Sandwich Night on Monday, a Banana Republic Employee goodbye party on Friday that rocked the house all night long and slow and steady growth of our business as we meet new people and form new relationships with customers.
But who would have guessed that the re-arranging and "feng shuiing" of our furniture would have turned me in to an emotional basket case. But it did! I'm talking like can't sleep, going to lose it at any minute.
I guess I should probably start by explaining how the baby we've created has taken on a life of its own. As my neighbor, Jen, put it we birthed a child that is now a unruly teenager that wants to do whatever it wants. I say that because our intention in creating it was to be a record store, cafe & bar that opens early and closes around 11PM.
I know that some people I tell this to look at me like I'm insane and point out that we have music and beer, so of course people are going to see you as a bar and want to come late at night. Maybe we were naive, but that's what we thought and this is our first business. So anyways, what has happened is that now we're a record store bar that opens at 4PM and closes late. The whole "cafe/coffeehouse" part has gone out the window - except for the fact that we have really good food and sandwiches.
Now, I love the bar business and being a bartender. I feel bad for my partner, Justin, who is still pulling double duty, working his old job during the days and working late in to the night at the bar. He hasn't had a day off in over a month. So this adds to the stress a little.
So for a control freak like me, letting our business figure out its own place in the world has been an exercise in patience (or lack there of) as evidence in the rash decision to re-arrange the furniture to fit this new "bar bar" model. Well, what seemed like a good decision at the time put me in a tail spin of epic proportions.
You see, I've spent the past 2 years drawing out the floor plan for our store hundreds of times. I firmly believe that it's that persistence of vision that got us the store in the first place. The physical end result is exactly like I've been drawing for two years. So as soon as we started changing the physical layout it threw me uber hard and I felt like I was losing my vision. I had nothing to grab on to and it turned me into an emotional wreck.
So yesterday, after a night of tossing and turning, I went in and put all the furniture back the way we originally intended, with the exception of the listening stations, which was the reason why we moved all the furniture in the first place. So we have a happy medium. We fixed our crowded record area but also kept the couch area in tact. And last night I slept like a baby :)

Beer and beautiful music: Hall of Records offers many things you want to consume
The Oregonian
September 24, 2010
This week has been a whirlwind. Saturday was our Grand Opening and the beginning of the work week for Justin and I. Today (Friday) is our first day off. But it's never really a day off. I will spend my day running between banks, farmer's markets, grocery stores and possibly a beer distributor.
I have been averaging about one trip down to Swan Island to do a personal beer pick up because we've run out of something. It's so hard to predict what kind of volume we're going to do. But I swear one of these days I won't have to go down there myself - I WILL get the order right for delivery!
We did some re-arranging of furniture in the store on yesterday. My friend Brooke and her mom were in town from Arizona and they helped me feng shui the space a little better. It all started because we thought the record/listening station area was a little cramped. If someone was listening to a record they would be in the way of someone trying to browse. So we expanded that area and ended up moving everything around. In the end, the flow is much better. Plus we now have the ability to move tables out of the way if we get crowded and people want to dance!
We're getting some amazing regulars coming in to the store and we're so grateful. I love Portland - the people are so nice.

Grand Opening Party Today!!
Today is our official grand opening party! We're opening at 2PM and expecting to get in to the full swing of things by around 4PM. I made super fun favors and champagne punch and we had t-shirts made by a local graphics guy in the neighborhood. We have DJs all day, are doing vinyl and food gift certificate raffles and have food samples. It should be a fun day!! But most importantly it's a huge thank you to all our friends who have helped through this process. I can't wait to spend the day with all the amazing people in our lives.

New Hours
The past few weeks have been amazing, enlightening and extremely fulfilling. The best part is that we're attracting extremely nice people to hang out in our store. Like unbelievably nice; from DJs that have spun to people dropping by for the first time to regulars. We feel so blessed.
We've also learned a few things along the way. One is that being open during the daytime hours may not be for us. Our intention in creating this business was to be a cafe & bar, but the final outcome turned out more like a bar, both in the way it looks physically and in general perception. So we're going to embrace what we are and start opening later in the day.
We're also going to start staying open later. It's the worst telling people we've closed when they're trying to come hang out!
Therefore, our new hours are:
Monday 4PM - 11PM
Tuesday - Thursday 4PM - Midnight
Friday & Saturday 2PM - 2AM
Sunday 2PM - 11PM
For the most part, we'll typically stay open later if people are hanging out, but we won't ever be closing earlier than the posted time. That was another suggestion from a customer. He said there's nothing worse than walking up to a place that is closed that says they should be open at that time.
We've been doing a lot of listening to customers lately!! Up next, after many talks with one of my favorite regulars, expanding the wine menu!! Can't wait to try new stuff!

Soul Sandwich!
The Portland Mercury wrote about our 1/2 Price Sandwich Night!
http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/my-what-a-busy-week
Here's the excerpt:
SOUL SANDWICH—Every Monday is Hall of Records' half-price sandwich night! The newly opened boutique vinyl shop, cafĂ©, and bar—which hosts a grand opening bash on Saturday, September 18—spins funk and soul classics and obscurities, with plenty of booze and eats. A record store with a bar inside: It's pretty much our version of paradise. MJS
Hall of Records, 3342 SE Belmont, half-price sandwiches 6 pm-close
It's pretty much our version of paradise, too :)
